The Enchanted Forest

by Josie (age 10) | Partner Organization: The Sing Me a Story Foundation

Once upon a time, there was a red fox named Ruby who lived in an enchanted forest. This meant the forest was full of magic. The animals had magical powers, and some of the flowers were enchanted too. Ruby had the gift of telekinesis—she could move things using her mind. (However, she also enjoyed using the flowers' gifts of magic!) One morning, Ruby woke up and crawled out of her little hollow. It was a sunny spring day, but the enchanted forest was unusually quiet. Ruby noticed that one of the magical flowers outside her den had turned black and withered. Just then, her ears perked up as an odd whirring noise filled the air.
Ruby followed the sound, and what she saw frightened her. At the edge of the forest stood two men. One was bald with large ears and a small handlebar mustache, while the other was a very short, fidgety man. The bald man wore a glove that made the whirring noise. Ruby watched in horror as he held up the glove, sucking the magic out of the forest and bottling it up. The areas drained of magic became dried up and ashen. Ruby knew she had to stop him! If the enchantment left the forest, it would wither, and all the animals would lose their homes. Ruby quickly followed the scent of the magic (kind of a fruity smell) to find a flower nearby. She ate a thunderstorm bloom, which gave her the ability to call storms. Rushing back to the clearing, she used her new powers to summon a large thunderstorm, scaring the men away from the forest.
After making sure they had left, Ruby decided to investigate further. She knocked on the door of a hollow tree trunk, home of Beverly, a wise old owl, to get some answers. “Hello, Ruby! You must be here about those nasty men,” Beverly said. Ruby nodded. “Ahh, I thought so. The tall man’s name is Gregor Von Bade, a French evil genius. He set up a lab just down the road. That anxious little man with him is Ernie, his assistant. Gregor is a terrible person, and Ernie is terrified of him. Gregor invented that glove to suck the magic out of our forest. He plans to harness the magic for himself so he can become all-powerful, take over the world, and sell whatever magic remains.” “How can I stop him?” Ruby asked. “Gregor has one weakness... candy. The only candy in the forest comes from the very rare jello tree. If you can collect sap from the jello tree, you can stop him.” “Where can I find a jello tree?” Ruby asked. “The wood nymphs will know,” Beverly said with a flap of her wings. “Good luck!” “Thank you!” Ruby called out, heading back into the forest in search of the wood nymphs.
When she found them, they told her the jello tree grew right next to the waterfall. However, to get to it, she would need to cross the river, which was too dangerous to swim across. The nymphs handed Ruby a small bucket to collect the sap. Determined, Ruby used her telekinesis to create a bridge from a fallen log. She carried the bucket in her mouth as she hopped across the river. Finally, she reached the jello tree. The tree was made of strawberry jello, and Ruby sniffed it eagerly. Using her teeth, she snipped a root, and sap began to flow into her bucket.
With the sap in hand, Ruby made her way back to the clearing. Along the way, she asked her good friend Summer the otter for help. Summer, who had water powers, agreed to join her. At the clearing, Summer and Ruby hid in the bushes, watching as Gregor continued to drain the magic. “You distract him,” Ruby whispered to Summer. Summer nodded and got to work, creating a huge geyser that shot out of the ground in front of Gregor and Ernie, startling them. While they were distracted, Ruby used her telekinesis to lift the bucket of jello sap and poured it over Gregor’s head. “AHH!” he screamed as his skin broke out in huge, itchy hives. Ruby quickly snatched the glove off his hand and broke it in two. With the glove destroyed, the stolen magic flowed back into the forest, restoring life to the plants. Gregor’s body swelled up from the allergic reaction, and he could only waddle away in defeat. Ernie, now free, timidly said, “You saved me! Thank you! Now I can pursue my dream of becoming a baker. Someday, I’ll open a bakery called ‘Ernie’s Enchanted Treats,' in honor of you, if you'd like that." And so, Ruby saved the enchanted forest from Gregor’s evil plan.
Epilogue: A few months later, the wood nymphs invited Ruby to visit a nearby town. “I’d love to!” Ruby replied excitedly. "I've always wanted to." And off they went. After hours of traveling, they arrived, feeling hungry. “Where can we find some food?” the wood nymph asked a townsfolk. The woman smiled, “We have the best bakery in the world here—Ernie’s Enchanted Treats!” Ruby grinned. And they all lived happily ever after. The End.
